Stay Healthy While Traveling Abroad

Overseas travel offers incredible experiences, but it can also expose you to serious health risks. Remember, your health is your responsibility. With proper preparation, you can prevent illnesses that might disrupt your holiday or pose greater dangers.

Consult your Doctor Before You Go

Schedule a visit with the doctors at Belconnen Mall Medical Centre well in advance of your departure (at least 4- 6 weeks prior to travel). They can provide essential advice on how to avoid infectious diseases you may encounter while traveling. This may include guidance on avoiding contaminated food and water, recommended medications, and necessary vaccinations. Please note travel health/vaccination consultations are charged privately and are time -based with a medicare rebate back to the patient.

Immunizations

Many travel-related diseases can be prevented through immunization. It’s important to discuss any vaccines or boosters you might need with our doctor. Consider these key vaccinations:

  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Influenza
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • Meningococcal disease
  • Rabies
  • Tuberculosis
  • Typhoid
  • Varicella (Chickenpox)
  • Yellow fever (not offered at Belconnen Mall Medical Centre)
  • Cholera
  • Measles

Some regions still experience high rates of diseases that are rare in Australia due to routine childhood vaccinations. If you were born overseas and are returning to visit family and friends, check with our doctor about your immunization status. Your immunity to certain diseases may have changed over time.
